CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

~Shirley~

BEFORE MY MOM PAST, IT was customary on Sundays to eat dinner together as a family and since Ahnna and her mom was always over, they partook in our weekly ritual. Now that Ahnna and I are living together we too have adopted this ritual. Baked salmon, rice pilaf, and sautéed California blend vegetables rested before us in the middle of the dinning room table. I reached across and took Ahnna extended hand as she gave the grace. As we ate, we complimented each other on how good the dinner was along with other random discussions.

“I attended Living Bread Baptist Church today… you know they are still looking for a pastor,” Ahnna stated.

“Oh, isn’t that the church where the pastor just up and quit.” I added.

“Disappeared is more like it… rumor is… he caught his wife cheating with one of the other pastors in the church,” Ahnna says.

“What???”

“No one has seen him since… They said he jumped into Biscayne Bay and drowned himself,” Ahnna says.

“How tragic,” I add.

“Yeah…” she says in between bites. “How is the mute?”

“His name is John,” I say.

“No… you named him John,” she retorts.

I give her the whole spiel on how he seem to be coming around and how he is attending Bible study, he even moved up a few rows from the back. In addition to that, John is leaving the facility now, which is a huge improvement. Once he came to us, he would only come out his room for a few hours a day. Though he won’t speak…

“Shirley… when are you going to get yourself a real man?” She interrupts.

“I have had enough men for a lifetime, so let’s not go down that road again,” I counter.

“I am just saying… you deserve a good man,” Ahnna sincerely adds.

“And I got one. His name is Jesus. Now lets put these dishes away,” I reply as I get up from the table and initiate removing the dinner dishes from the table.

Later that night I struggle to fall asleep. The light from the small clock next to my bed illuminates the room which is joined by the golden lights that peers through my bedroom window. Somewhere between thinking about my past and present I manage to fall asleep, only to be suddenly awakened from what I can tell no apparent reason but this eerie feeling that has rushed over me. My eyes sweep over my room before laying my head back on the pillow. I glance over at the digital clock that reads 3:00 AM, sigh, and stare into the ceiling.

Today is one of those mornings when I am glad to reside close to my job. My late night insomnia caused a slow rise for me. I waited for the last minute before getting up to rush to work, foregoing my early morning Starbucks Caramel Macchiato coffee. I know I will regret it in a matter of hours, but maybe I can make it up for lunch. Lately, John is somewhere close to the reception desk to greet me as I walk into work.
